Twenty-four hours

Don’t be ungrateful. You’ve had about 24 hours, perhaps a bit less, of what ‘normal’ people have most of the time: the opportunity to take the day as it comes, without pain or blurriness or the constant sense of being everywhere and nowhere — least of all in the present situation — without fear of completely losing track of what’s happening around you, of the noise, demands, questions and the sheer presence of others, without the sense of being completely out of sync, like a bicycle on a motorway.

You didn’t perceive every passing car, every footstep, every word spoken as a personal affront, didn’t see the sun as a formidable enemy and its light as a merciless bombardment. You could think things through clearly and patiently, order your thoughts, speak and pause at the right time, observe and see people as they are, neither good nor evil, just human beings.

You’ve had a reprieve. It was short, but that’s better than if it had never happened..
